different topic. i realized that a stethoscope is an important tool for all nurses. most of us are aware of its basic use to listen to heart sounds. but you know that if you use the stethoscope properly, then you can perform various functions with it. know about the various ways to use the stethoscope to offer the best care to your patients. use stethoscope as your partner one thing you need to remember is that you would be using this device for your entire career as a registered nurse. rather than treating your stethoscope more as a device, just consider it as your companion and partner in use. before you decide to buy a stethoscope, read the reviews about the best stethoscopes for nurses . this part is very important. it is essential to ensure that the stethoscope fits properly into your ear. you need to hold it properly. everyone has its own technique and grip, and it can be really difficult for you to learn till you have better feel of the device. wearing your stethoscope around the neck is the only way to keep the device handy. it allows you to get perfect position while diagnosing when you wear it around the neck. such issues are ideal for handling when you are practising. even you must pick the right position of the device on your body how you will use it. the design of stethoscope the stethoscope comprises of three major parts. it has the chestpiece, bell, and a diaphragm . there is tubing that runs up to ears and earpieces that can hear what is coming out from the device. the bell and diaphragm are extremely sensitive parts. they pick heartbeat sounds with ease, and this will help you hear the sound more easily. every stethoscope offers you to allow hearing sounds, and you can tap chestpiece and still listen to sounds. the tubes are prepared with heavy rubber that is easy to move around while you move the device. getting earpieces into your ears it is extremely important to get earpieces properly into the ears. it is the only way to listen to sounds adequately. to make sure that you listen to sounds properly, you need to fit the earpieces well into the ears. make sure that earpieces fit snugly and hold a good seal to obstruct the ambient noise. in some stethoscopes, you can tilt the earpieces in order to have a better fit. it is essential to keep the earpieces close to your head. if the earpieces are too tight or loose, then readjust them. using the diaphragm and bell the diaphragm is the vibrating part that transmits sound to the earpieces through the stethoscope’s tubing . it is the sealed membrane that vibrates the same way as our eardrum. when the diaphragm moves, the air column within the stethoscope also moves. this moves the air in and out of ear canal so that you can hear the sound. the surface area of the diaphragm is bigger than the air column, and hence the sound moves to the earpieces without any obstruction. with the diaphragm, it is possible to listen to high-frequency sounds. you can place it on the patient’s body in order to listen to the required sound. if you wish to use the bell to listen to low-frequency sounds, then you can turn the device to use the bell. this is good when you are looking for a sound that is harder to pick up. some ailments require checking patients for high and low sound. various uses of a stethoscope to measure blood pressure this is one of the common uses of the stethoscope. you can use the stethoscope’s diaphragm to be sure that you can get to flat part of the device on the upper artery of the chest. you don’t have to place any pressure as the veins are right close to the surface. you need to put the stethoscope on the inner elbow so that you can listen to the pulse movement. you can then let go of the blood pressure bag so that you are able to move to the next step. listening to heart sounds the sounds of a heart are very easy to pick up. the stethoscope helps you understand the sound of a patient’s heart. the stethoscope helps you to identify that whether the heartbeat is normal or not quickly. you can move the stethoscope around the heart in order to check the proper functioning of the valves. listening to lungs by placing the device on the back of a patient, it is possible to listen to the lungs sound. the stethoscope allows you to identify any fluid congestion in lungs, which is easy to hear. it allows you to notice and hear how the air comes and leaves the lungs. listening to bowel movements you can easily listen to bowel movements with your stethoscope. it is essential to move the device around various parts of the bowels to check for any blockages. you can listen to various movements in the bowel by moving to the four areas, which are intestines, stomach, and bladder. your stethoscope is highly sensitive. it needs to be stored and cleaned every day and after diagnose. it is essential to maintain the effectiveness of stethoscope and to ensure it does not lead to an allergic reaction to you or the patients being diagnosed. how can vestibular migraine cause vertigo? by dorothy b. west | nov 20, 2017 | uncategorized a migraine is a highly debilitating chronic ailment across the world. it is almost equally prevalent as high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, and asthma. most of the individuals tend to develop migraine issues during most productive years of their lives, that is between 20 – 40 years. despite enhanced efforts to enhance public awareness and better diagnostic capabilities, it is believed that 50% of individuals suffering from a migraine go mismanaged and undiagnosed. what is vestibular migraine? often deemed as ‘a sick headache’, this is a disorder characterized by severe progressive of head pain, the onset of pain in the head, pounding, throbbing, and interference with the routine activities of the person. when there is repeated dizziness or vertigo in individuals accompanied with or without a headache, then this disorder is known as a vestibular migraine . this disorder is also known as migrainous vertigo, migraine-associated vertigo, and migraine-related vestibulopathy. vestibular dysfunction and migraine almost 40% of patients suffering from a migraine is accompanied by a vestibular syndrome that involves a disruption in their balance and dizziness. such symptoms might be experienced prior, during, or even after the course of migraine event. there are few interesting parallels existing between a migraine and non-migrainous vestibular disorder. most of the environmental and food triggers for migraineurs are the same as to patients with non-migrainous vestibular dysfunction. foods, hormonal fluctuations, and climatic changes often increase the severity of both conditions. eventually, certain medications and diet modifications can help manage a migraine and the resulted vertigo. but one important aspect is that often such ways to manage the disorder fail to completely resolve a headache and vertigo problem. symptoms of vestibular migraine resulting in vertigo a vestibular migraine correlating with vertigo may include, but is not limited to various symptoms, like dizziness intolerance of motion with respect to head, eyes, or entire body spontaneous vertigo attacks vomiting and nausea reduced focus of the eye with photosensitivity tinnitus and sound sensitivity loss of balance and ataxia cervicalgia or neck pain associated with muscle spasms spatial disorientation anxiety pain confusion accompanies with altered cognition how a vestibular migraine causes vertigo? is most of the cases a migraine is deemed to be associated to benign recurrent vertigo or adults or the paroxysmal vertigo of childhood, but it is also possible that some vestibular migraine patients may also show symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or bppv even when the migraine event has ceased. this is considered to be mainly because of a combination of vascular events resulting in alteration of neural activity linked to the migraine event. it is considered that such changes more commonly affect the superior part of the vestibular nerve or the utricle and anterior vestibular artery than the inferior part of the vestibular nerve and posterior vestibular artery. this explains that most of the results obtained within the normal range are often availed with the vestibular evoked myogenic potentials or vemp testing of migraine patients when the true bppv has not occurred. the symptoms of a migraine can happen with pain and dizziness or can occur with dizziness and without pain. individuals suffering from a migraine can experience vertigo at any point in time. even vertigo resulted from a migraine can be accompanied with or without movement. such symptoms may last for a couple of seconds or few days. the attacks often occur in groups, instigating and stopping for a specific period of time. vertigo occurring from a vestibular migraine is a very common disorder. once vision changes, vertigo is one of the most frequently reported symptoms particularly with those experiencing ‘a migraine with aura.’ an understanding migraine with aura resulting in vertigo a migraine with aura, also known as a classic migraine is accompanied by aura features and headache. the characteristics of the aura are similar to those for a migraine with aura features. the common characteristics of a migraine with aura are: one reversible symptom of aura indicating cns or focal central nervous system dysfunction that is tinnitus, vertigo, ataxia, dysarthria, reduced hearing, paresthesias, double vision, reduced levels of consciousness, and paresis. symptom of aura developing gradually over more than 2 minutes a headache occurring during, before, or after 60 minutes of the aura if the aura characteristics continue to occur with a migraine, then 2 or more symptoms can be experienced, such as: vertigo tinnitus visual symptoms in hemifields of both eyes ataxia double vision dysarthria bilateral paresthesias bilateral paresis reduced levels of consciousness visual disturbances in both hemifields of both eyes if you are experiencing severe vertigo, then it can result in difficulty in walking or standing. even it can lead to nausea. if the problem still persists then it can result in another symptom of light sensitivity, also known as photophobia. migraine vs. headache: where does it differ? by dorothy b. west | nov 6, 2017 | info among the head related issues, conditions like a headache and migraines can be seriously disturbing. it breaks your schedule and prevents you from engaging in your regular activities. though conditions like a migraine and headache are similar in nature, they aren’t the same. people get confused between a headache and migraine. they address the terms interchangeably as they do not know how a migraine works. so here we are going to break down the whole concept of a migraine and also state the differences between a headache and a migraine. understanding the difference: why is it important to understand the terms appropriately? at the end of the day, both the conditions are in the head, and they generate similar pain and pressure, so any term works. is that what you think? then you are going wrong there. if we have to explain simply, the terms are different, which means the cause and cure will also differ accordingly. so here are the differences that you should know regarding a migraine and headache. headache: headaches usually begin with a mild pressure that is felt throughout the head. the pain gradually increases and leaves you restless. there are different reasons behind a headache. there are also different types of them as in tension headaches, cluster headaches, sinus headaches and thunderclap headaches. the causes and the relief measures vary based on the intensity of the headache. a headache can also be one of the factors for other major diseases and medical conditions, for example, a brain tumor. so always look for other symptoms that come along with a headache. this can help you figure out the trouble that you are facing. women can face continuous head-throbbing and headache during their menstrual cycle. but since there is also menstrual migraine, they will have to look at the symptoms and find out the problem carefully. a headache can also be the beginning factor for issues like hemorrhage, stroke or an internal injury. this is when you will face thunderclaps headache. the pain with shoot up within 60 seconds and will cause panic and stress. in such cases, the victim will require immediate medical attention. so since your pain is severe and is repetitive, you cannot call it a migraine. migraine : unlike a headache, where the pain is spread throughout the head, in a migraine, the pain is only on one side of the head. it begins with a pain that is severe, and this one-sided pain can even spread down to ear or eye on that particular side. so when the pain spreads to both the sides, am i safe, because it is not a migraine? no, sometimes you can go wrong at that conclusion because at times you can have a migraine on both the sides. sadly, it is only a medical condition, and you can have it on either side. migraines can be accompanied by other problems such as nausea, dizziness, temporary loss of vision, unclear sight, sensitivity to light and sound, pain in eye or ear and so on. unlike a headache, a migraine will not come before certain symptoms for most of the victims. this includes depression, constipation, frequent yawning, irritability and even unusual food cravings. this can differ from one person to the other. finding out the symptoms can help you treat your condition appropriately at the right time. migraine: causes and foods that can help prevent it by dorothy b. west | nov 6, 2017 | info a migraine is one of the most irritable medical conditions that one can face. a migraine is a continuous pain accompanied by throbbing only on one side of the head. people who suffer from a migraine also suffer from other problems like dizziness and nausea. there are a lot of things that people who are suffering from a migraine will have to hear. while most of them are self-generated facts, few of them are true. most of the migraine victims also suffer from problems in understanding what to eat and what not to. so here we will help you understand the causes of a migraine and the ways in which you have to change your food habits to avoid the problem. causes of a migraine: before you change your food habits in accordance with your medical issue, it is imperative that you understand the reason behind you trouble and the causes behind it. so let’s see the causes of a migraine. some of the basic reasons behind a migraine are stress, climatic changes, and food habits. the reasons may also vary based on gender as women might face a menstrual migraine, which occurs only during their menstrual cycle. people who are exposed to a hazardous environment as in a smokers’ room can cause a migraine. too much exposure to noise can also cause a migraine in them. there is also something called vacation migraines, which happen when you are on a tour or outing. this is because of the change in climate. few studies prove that these migraines are also genetic in nature. while few of these conditions are unavoidable, other types can be reduced to a great extent if you can focus a bit on your diet patterns. food habits that can prevent a migraine: understanding your diet patterns and analyzing the food that you consume on a regular basis is the first step in understanding your migraine trouble. some of the foods such as red wine, chocolates, meat and sweeteners and even some of the milk products can initiate a headache. so if this is your case, try to avoid that particular food that causes a headache and disturbance in your body. leafy products: eat a lot of greens and leafy food items, such as beet greens, lettuce, spinach and kale. these greens contain migraine fighting components such as b2, b6 and also omega 3. if you didn’t know earlier, omega 3 is closely associated with brain development and thereby it is can act strongly against a migraine causing agents. carry nuts: nuts and seed food items are easy to carry. grab them on a regular basis or fill a snack box that you will always have in the hand kit that you carry. almonds, cashews, sesame seeds, brazil nuts and many others are widely considered as magnesium supplements. this will help you fight migraine disorders. red meat: meat is supposedly believed to carry agents that can instigate a headache. but the case is different if it is red meat. red meat does the opposite job and can help you fight off a migraine. fish belongs to the red meat category and is rich in omega 3 content. remember what we saw earlier? omega 3 fights a migraine. eggs: eggs are so healthy products that are rich in protein . the healthy components of eggs reduce a headache to a great extent. so the next time you feel that you will have a migraine, try eating a dish with egg. it will work wonders. migraine at school it can be difficult to manage your migraine at school
